It instead uses heat-sensitive paper, which is more expensive than regular printing paper. Thermal receipts, on the other hand, are more cost effective than other types of receipts.  Thermal printing (or direct thermal printing) creates a printed image by selectively heating thermal paper as it passes through the thermal print head. The heat-sensitive paper's coating turns black where it is heated, resulting in the desired image.
